Effects of learning and adaptation on population viability

چکیده

Cultural adaptation is one means by which conservationists may help populations adapt to threats. A learned behavior protect an individual from a threat, and the can be transmitted horizontally (within generations) vertically (between generations), rapidly conferring population-level protection. Although possible in theory, it remains unclear whether such manipulations work conservation setting; what conditions are required for them work; how they might affect evolutionary process. We examined models population through both genetic cultural mechanisms. Our was motivated invasion of highly toxic cane toads (Rhinella marina) across northern Australia resultant declines endangered quolls (Dasyurus hallucatus), attack fatally poisoned toads. novel management strategy wild trained avoid reduce extinction probability. used simulation model tailored quoll life history. Within simulations, individuals were continuous evolving trait determined innate tendency applied this viability setting. To gain insight into dynamics (in we saw transitory peak over time), also developed simple analytical dynamics. This showed that strength natural selection declined as transmission rate increased proceeded below critical value relative levels protection conferred versus Together, our play powerful role preventing extinction, rates need high occur.
